An investigation by the South Korean Fair Trade Commission (FTC) into alleged unfair practices by Apple is expected to result in the iPhone maker being fined, says a local report. Apple is accused of ‘dumping’ both advertising and repair costs on carriers. It follows earlier fines for unfair contracts in both Taiwan and France … Korea’s FTC began its investigation almost two years ago. Apple is accused of imposing minimum purchase volumes on carriers regardless of sales levels, forcing carriers to meet part of the cost of warranty repairs and obliging carriers to run and pay for Apple-created iPhone ads....

A recently-successful Kickstarter campaign is aiming to resurrect Pilgrim in the Microworld, an important and long-out-of-print book that dissects Atari’s classic game, Breakout. One of the earliest and most rigorous works of long-form game criticism, Pilgrim in the Microworld was written by professor David Sudnow and originally published in 1979. Despite its significance to the history of video game writing, the book has been out of print for over 30 years and is currently only available through the secondhand market or legally-dubious PDF documents....

A security researcher at Johns Hopkins University who led an examination into the robustness of smartphone encryption systems says he was shocked by the Android and iOS vulnerabilities they discovered. He said that iOS in particular has extremely secure encryption capabilities, but these are not in use much of the time … Wired reports. The researchers said that iPhones essentially have three levels of protection: Cryptographers at Johns Hopkins University used publicly available documentation from Apple and Google as well as their own analysis to assess the robustness of Android and iOS encryption....
