Kristen Stewart has expressed interest in playing a gay superhero. Although the actress had some prominent roles in the early 2000s, such as Panic Room and Jon Favreau’s Zathura: A Space Adventure, she didn’t truly break out into the mainstream until 2008’s Twilight. Based on Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling novel of the same name, the film was a huge hit and spawned multiple sequels. The saga concluded with 2012’s Breaking Dawn - Part 2. Since then, despite the occasional blockbuster fare, Stewart has mostly reinvented herself as a more distinguished performer - starring in acclaimed films like Still Alice and turning in her own acclaimed performances in such films as Personal Shopper.
In recent years, the actress has more prominently expressed herself as bisexual. Stewart recently opened up regarding comments made about her sexuality. The actress, who previously found herself the subject of tabloid fodder while dating fellow Twilight star Robert Pattinson, revealed that she’d been told to hide her sexual orientation. The advice was reportedly offered in the belief that it would allow her to secure more high-profile work - such as a Marvel movie.
In an interview with Variety to promote her upcoming film, Seberg, Stewart discussed a whole range of topics. Apart from the aforementioned comments, she conveyed that she didn’t think that the roles she’d been offered had changed since coming out. The young star also revealed that she’d used Marvel as a reference point within the previous story due to it being “literally just a big conglomerate-y type thing.” With a laugh, Stewart then added: “I’m sure they would love to hire the gay kids to be superheroes.” Seberg co-star and MCU stalwart, Anthony Mackie, was also present for the interview. When asked what superhero Stewart could play, the actress injected with her own definitive answer: “A gay one!”
On the heels of the record-breaking success of Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios previously expressed interest in walking a more diverse path with its upcoming movies. In which case, Stewart playing a gay superhero in the MCU sometime in the future isn’t entirely out of the question. Mackie suggested that Stewart should play “the gay female Falcon Captain America”.
Mackie’s role as Sam Wilson aka Falcon is just one of the many ways the MCU has become more diverse over the years. After helping to defeat Thanos and his army, Mackie’s character was even chosen by to carry the famous shield and take over the Captain America mantle. Sam Wilson’s transition from Falcon to Captain America will be explored in the upcoming Disney+ series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Seberg will see Stewart take on the role of Jean Seberg, a real-life fashion icon who was targeted by the FBI’s COINTELPRO surveillance program after starring in Jean-Luc Godard’s 1960 movie, Breathless and becoming aligned with the Civil Rights Movement. As well as that, Stewart will play a central role in Elizabeth Banks’ upcoming Charlie’s Angels reboot and battle monsters of the deep in Fox’s horror-thriller, Underwater. Whether a superhero role is indeed her future, though, be it within Marvel or DC, remains to be seen. It would certainly be a case of brilliant timing, however, given Pattinson’s recent casting as the new Batman. Whatever the case, there would no doubt be a number of fans who would love to see it.
