When it was announced that Kong was getting his own movie ahead of clashing with Godzilla down the line, many questioned how the beast would be able to put up a fight. As shown in Gareth Edward’s Godzilla, the creature towers over nearly everything in sight. Traditionally, Kong - while being a giant ape - does not even begin to compare to the size boasted by his eventual foe. This is why Kong’s size has been drastically increased for Kong: Skull Island.

Just as Kong in Peter Jackson’s King Kong was comparable in size to the planes that attacked him, so far in the marketing for Skull Island, Kong’s hands are an equal size to the helicopters invading his home. If there was still any doubt as to just how monstrous Kong will be, the latest poster makes it abundantly clear.

Warner Bros./Legendary released a Taiwanese poster for the movie that shows The Eighth Wonder of the World standing tall on his remote island, where only the mountains in the background begin to be of a similar size. Outside of Kong’s size, the poster continues an incredibly strong and unique marketing campaign, especially when comparing Skull Island’s posters to that of other blockbusters.

Just like the many posters that have come before, this one continues to use reds, oranges, and yellows to illuminate Kong’s frame. Whether it is the IMAX poster centering on Kong himself, the Japanese poster full of monsters, or the Apocalypse Now-style poster, WB and Legendary have crafted beautiful one-sheets time and time again that are worthy of collecting.

As unfortunate as it may be, studios recently have tended toward photoshopping as many characters, vehicles, etc. onto posters to show the full range of what the film has to offer. This results in posters that are generic in style and are almost interchangeable between various franchises. With Skull Island leading this charge for more artistic posters, hopefully other studios will follow suit.

With Skull Island experiencing a great marketing campaign to this point, it will be interesting to see how it will help them stave off the furious March competition that surrounds the film. Logan, Power Rangers, Beauty and the Beast, and Ghost in the Shell are just a few of the high-profile releases in March. The quality of Skull Island will surely play a big factor in determining how big of a turnout the film gets, but good to great reviews coupled with this marketing should help it be a big hit early in 2017.
