Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige confirms Kit Harington will play Black Knight in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Eternals. Earlier this year, Marvel wrapped up Phase 3 of the MCU with Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, and for a few weeks fans had little idea what to expect from Phase 4. Then at San Diego Comic-Con last month, Feige took the stage in Hall H to unveil the first two years of the MCU Phase 4 slate, including a host of movies and Disney+ TV shows.
This weekend Marvel Studios’ parent company Disney is hosting the D23 Expo 2019, a biannual event where Disney can put all its various properties on display - including Star Wars, Pixar and Marvel. On Friday evening, Disney+ hosted its own panel, previewing what content will be available on the upcoming streaming service, including originals from Marvel Studios. There, Marvel announced three new TV shows, including Ms. Marvel - which was originally reported a few hours before the panel - She-Hulk and Moon Knight. On Saturday, Marvel Studios and Feige also joined the Walt Disney Studios panel to help hype the Mouse House’s upcoming film slate.
During the Disney movie panel, Feige took the time to further tease Phase 4 of the MCU, including confirming reports that Harington will join the MCU and revealing the Game of Thrones actor will play Dane Whitman aka. Black Knight in Eternals. Harington did not take the stage with the rest of the film’s cast, nor was Black Knight included in the Eternals character costumes concept art that debuted at D23.
The character of Dane Whitman was introduced to the Marvel Comics universe in 1967 as the nephew of the villainous Black Knight, who passed the mantle onto Dane and asked him to restore honor to their legacy. Black Knight has joined forces with various superhero teams throughout Marvel Comics history, including the Avengers and the Defenders. It’s unclear how Black Knight will fit into the Eternals movie since he’s not an Eternal himself, but it’s no doubt a significant role for Harington to nab coming off the final season of Game of Thrones.
Since Harington’s Black Knight isn’t an Eternal, he could potentially spin off into another property or join forces with other Earth-bound heroes for another Avengers movie - if and when Marvel Studios gets around to making more Avengers films. Of course, some fans may be disappointed Harington’s role is Black Knight. After the initial report surfaced yesterday, speculation that Harington would play the MCU’s Wolverine was so rampant, “Wolverine” trended on Twitter in the United States. Still, though Harington won’t be picking up the adamantium claws, fans will still get to see the actor reunite with his Game of Thrones co-star, Richard Madden, in Eternals. Madden co-stars in Eternals as Ikaris, a member of the titular group.
