Kinsa today has announced the launch of its Elmo Smart Ear Thermometer and companion application. The device announced today is a visual update on their original Smart Ear Thermometer sporting an Elmo themed design instead of the original blue. The Elmo Smart Ear Thermometer takes one-second readings, combines them with acknowledged symptoms from within the app, and then uses that data to create actionable next steps.
Available through the companion app, Sesame Street’s Elmo gives children empathetic words such as “feel better soon” and sympathizes with them when they aren’t feeling well.
Kinsa’s offering takes their already successful smart thermometer, and targets it towards families who want to make a more comfortable experience for sick children. Focusing on Sesame Street’s iconic character Elmo, Kinsa can bring a recognizable face to a somewhat foreign looking device. Kinsa’s Elmo Smart Thermometer features one large button, one setting, and an easy-to-clean design that helps eliminate the need for probe covers. The Smart Thermometer incorporates a large, backlit LCD display to make use easy in the day or even at night.
The companion application gives multiple users the ability to manage profiles and track symptoms. For further customization, each user profile can be customized with various characters from Sesame Street including Kermit the Frog, Big Bird, Bert, and Ernie. The user also has the option to join a Kinsa group within the app to see what common illnesses are circulating around the local communities. Kinsa is working towards building a real-time health map to track potential epidemics before they spread.
This family-focused thermometer follows Withings’ announcement from yesterday of an FDA-approved no-contact wireless thermometer.
