Kevin Feige has revealed the one scene in Avengers: Endgame that represents the culmination of his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far. Avengers: Endgame picks up from last year’s shocking conclusion to Avengers: Infinity War in which Mad Titan Thanos used the Infinity Stones to wipe out half of all life across the universe. Naturally, the continuation to that cliffhanger was eagerly anticipated and since its release last month, Avengers: Endgame has been on a record-breaking streak at the box office, and is currently battling it out with James Cameron’s Avatar on the list of highest grossing movies in history.

Of course, Avengers: Endgame represents far more than just the financial peak of the superhero genre, it’s also the culmination of over a decade’s worth of MCU movies, and neatly brings together the franchise’s first “saga” that began back in 2008 with Iron Man. The film concludes the tale of the Infinity Stones that started with Captain America: The First Avenger, lays to rest the franchise’s very first superhero and finally brings together virtually every main character in the series including Brie Larson’s newcomer, Captain Marvel.

Marvel Studios’ president and undisputed overlord of the MCU, Kevin Feige, conducted a Reddit AMA session yesterday and was asked whether he could single out a favorite scene from the entire series. Predictably, Feige wouldn’t be drawn into playing favorites, but he did single out one particular moment in Avengers: Endgame that he felt his MCU career had been working towards. Kevin answered:

The scene Feige is referring to comes during the final battle between the Avengers and the assembled forces of Thanos. All hope looks lost, as Thanos travels from the past to ensure his inevitability and wipe out the entire known universe in favor of creating a brand new one. With the weakened superhero team facing insurmountable odds, Captain America hears a familiar voice crackle over his earpiece: his buddy Falcon who had been resurrected along with the other dusted lifeforms earlier in the movie. Gradually, the remainder of the MCU begin pouring out of Doctor Strange’s portals to lend their aid in the final battle.

“There are too many to list, but I will say my entire MCU career was building up to that “on your left” moment in Endgame.”

Falcon’s reintroduces himself to Cap with the line “on your left” which will only make sense to those who have seen Captain America: The Winter Soldier. When Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson first meet in this film, the duo share the same jogging route but, due to Cap’s super-powered body, Rogers repeatedly overtakes Wilson and utters the phrase “on your left” every single time, much to the future Falcon’s annoyance.

It’s certainly easy to see why Kevin Feige would single this scene out as a landmark moment for him. Every major story beat in the MCU from the arrival of Captain America and introduction of the Infinity Stones, to the Sokovia Accords and Thanos’ snap was building to the moment where every single superhero finally banded together in one last attempt to defeat the most despicable villain the franchise has ever seen. The fact that this epic, punch-the-air Avengers: Endgame sequence is heralded by a comedic callback to a previous film is also a perfect representation of the MCU’s approach - meaningful drama mixed with light-hearted character interactions that rewards fans for watching previous installments.
