Kelly Clarkson covered Lady Gaga’s song “Shallow” from A Star Is Born and blew audiences away with her rendition. Clarkson got her start as the first winner of American Idol in 2002 and went on to become a major pop star, having sold 25 million albums, including over 100 #1 Billboard singles. She’s earned countless awards in that time, including Grammy Awards, American Music Awards, MTV Awards and even a few Academy of Country Music Awards.
Unlike Lady Gaga, Clarkson doesn’t have much of an acting career, though, perhaps thanks to the film From Justin to Kelly, which many critics claim is one of the worst movies ever made. She has done some voice acting, though. Most recently, she lent her voice to the animated feature UglyDolls, an upcoming movie based on the UglyDoll toy line. Clarkson also currently serves as one of the coaches of The Voice, but will get her own talk show on NBC, set to begin sometime in 2019.
However, it’s Clarkson’s pipes that made her famous, and her rendition of “Shallow” is a reminder of why. GagaDaily posted the video of Clarkson’s performance of the song on YouTube, which features an introduction with Clarkson mentioning how much she admires Lady Gaga, as well as how the two women first met.
Lady Gaga’s career is currently at its peak. Not only did she spend a few seasons starring in FX’s American Horror Story, she also wowed audiences in the 2018 film A Star Is Born. That film earned several Golden Globes nominations, along with winning a Best Original Song award for “Shallow.” The movie was also nominated for a score of Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Bradley Cooper), Best Actress (Lady Gaga) and Best Original Song. The singer-turned-actress also remains a favorite with film audiences: When A Star is Born premiered, some of her fans posted bad reviews of Venom to try to convince moviegoers to see the Lady Gaga movie instead.
There is no denying Lady Gaga’s star power, especially when others in the industry continue to praise her and the movie, such as Sean Penn. But Clarkson’s cover of “Shallow” also proves that Clarkson still has what it takes to captivate an audience. As Clarkson mentions in the video, the two women may seem like they are worlds apart, but they still have a lot in common since they both love music and are talented songstresses.
