Katy Keene is a TV show that will be airing soon. A musical, a comedy, and a drama all rolled into one, it will have an interesting story, relatable characters played by notable actors and actresses, an amazing setting, and some awesome costumes (we want them all, FYI).
Developed by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Michael Grassi, this series is actually based on an Archie Comics character, which sounds promising! So, before it all begins, let’s break it all down. Here are five things we know about Katy Keene and five things we hope to see in this exciting new tale!
Know: It Is A Riverdale Spin-Off
For years, Archie Comics has created stories about Archie Andrews and his friends (Jughead Jones, Betty Cooper, and Veronica Lodge), as well as about characters like Sabrina “The Teenage Witch” Spellman and Josie and the Pussycats. Another character from this world is Katy Keene, a model, actress, and singer.
In 2017, a show based on Archie and his pals, Riverdale, premiered, and this new series, Katy Keene, is a spin-off that is set five years in the future.
Hope: It References Archie Comics
Riverdale has done very well for itself, and since Katy Keene is a spin-off, there will surely be some references or Easter eggs pertaining to Archie and the gang. Another show within this universe is Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a Netflix that stars Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina Spellman and that has been around since 2018. Perhaps there will be some mentions of the teen sorceress, as well, or even some inside jokes that only avid readers of the comic books would understand. Either would be very neat and very appreciated.
Know: It Stars Lucy Hale
Lucy Hale is a singer and an actress who played Stella Abbott in Life Sentence, Effie Kaligaris in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, Olivia Barron in Truth or Dare and Aria Montgomery on Pretty Little Liars.
Now, she will introduce many more people to Katy Keene, a fashion designer who wants to make it big in New York City. The story will cover the main characters’ backgrounds and obstacles throughout this journey, which will be filled with music and incredible outfits.
Hope: It Shows Off So Many Ensembles
New York is known for its style, and this show focuses on artists, including some working in fashion. That said, the clothes of this series have already promised to be quite intriguing.
According to photos and videos that have already been released, there will be leopard print on Josie McCoy. There will be fabulous costumes on Jorge / Ginger Lopez. And, there will be several stunning pieces on Katy Keene, such as glam skirts and retro tops. Originally, this comic book character was marketed as the country’s queen of pin-ups and fashions, so everyone should be prepared to want to go shopping after seeing these people within this story.
Know: It Will Focus On Four Aspiring Artists
Katy Keene’s story centers around four aspiring artists in New York City. One is, obviously, Katy Keene, who is played by Lucy Hale, is a fashion designer. There is Josie McCoy, a character who was first seen on Riverdale, is played by Ashleigh Murray. She is a singer, and she will be five years older than she was in Riverdale. One is Jorge / Ginger Lopez, a Broadway performer and drag queen who is played by Jonny Beauchamp. And there is Pepper Smith, who is a mysterious It Girl, into fashion and played by Julia Chan.
Hope: It Is Relatable
Even though not everyone moves to a new city to chase their dreams, most people can relate to wanting something and fighting to try and get that something. Therefore, that central part of this story should appeal to many. Furthermore, this series is about music, about drag, about friendship, about risks. Hopefully, the deeper messages and subtle themes will also draw in more fans, speak to the audience and convey messages relating to important worldly topics.
Know: It Will Feature Some Familiar Faces
Besides the stars above, Katy Keene will also feature some more familiar faces.
Katherine LaNasa, from shows like Three Sisters and Two and a Half Men, will portray Gloria Grandbilt, a personal shopper. Daphne Rubin-Vega, who was Mimi Marquez in the play Rent, will be Luisa Lopez, Jorge’s mother. James Maslow, of Big Time Rush, will portray Alan M. Mayberry, a love interest of Josie’s. And Bernadette Peters, an acclaimed Broadway star, will be Miss Freesia, a mother figure to Pepper.
Hope: It Introduces Fans To Icons & Rising Stars
One of the best parts of the new television series would be seeing established celebrities in different roles, seeing iconic legends on the screen, period, and discovering rising stars. Katy Keene has a mix of well-known actors and actresses (like Lucy Hale), superstars who have been around for decades (like Bernadette Peters), and some lesser-known people who profiles will be heightened, thanks to this show.
Know: It Will Premiere On February 6
One year ago, Katy Keene got a pilot order from The CW. In May of last year, it was picked up as an official series. And this month, thirteen more scripts were ordered by The CW.
This television series will finally air on February 6, 2020, so mark those calendars, set those DVRs, plan those watch parties, and get ready!
Hope: It Is A Success
New TV shows start all the time, and many factors go into their success. Just look at Lucy Hale’s background: Pretty Little Liars, which was based on a popular book series, was on the air for seven seasons. This while Life Sentence, a series she was on in 2018, was canceled after just one season.
This upcoming series is based on comic books. It is following in the footsteps of Riverdale. It does have an interesting cast, setting, and plot. So we hope that when all is said and done, Katy Keene is a true success story!
