When people talk about some of the best directors working in the entertainment industry nowadays, Kathryn Bigelow usually sits somewhere near the top of that list. It’s not hard to see why either, following her critically-acclaimed, award-winning work on war dramas like The Hurt Locker or timeless, beloved action flicks like Point Break. The director made one of her best films to date in 2012 as well with Zero Dark Thirty, which told the true story of one CIA operative’s tireless anti-terrorist work throughout the years following 9/11, leading up to her eventual finding of Osama Bin Laden in 2011.
Bigelow received massive amounts of critical acclaim for Zero Dark Thirty, but hasn’t released a feature film since. Luckily, for fans of the filmmaker, though, that’s all about to change this year when Bigelow returns to the big screen with Detroit. Based on a true story, the film marks Bigelow’s third feature collaboration with screenwriter Mark Boal, following their work together on The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty.
After months and months with little to no news coming from the production, it looks like fans will finally get their first taste of Bigelow’s latest outing sooner than they might have expected. Trailer-Track is reporting that the first trailer for Detroit is expected to be released by Annapurna Pictures sometime this week, and will run 2 minutes and 30 seconds long. It is expected to be released in conjunction with the theatrical debut of Universal’s The Fate of the Furious, which promises to be yet another box office titan this year.
Described as a “crime drama,” Detroit is set against the backdrop of the 1967 Detroit riots, one of the largest citizen uprisings in the United States’ history, following a controversial police raid. Not much is known about the film other than that basic plot summary, but this does continue Bigelow’s recent fascination with bringing tumultuous moments in U.S. history to life on the big screen. And if Detroit manages to be as intense as either Hurt Locker or Zero Dark Thirty, then it is sure to impress.
Understandably, the cast for Detroit is fairly spectacular too. In addition to the highly anticipated Pacific Rim: Uprising, the film is one of John Boyega’s first big post-Force Awakens additions to his growing filmography, and he’ll be starring alongside other talented acting veterans and up and comers like Will Poulter, Anthony Mackie, Jason Mitchell, John Krasinski, Jack Reynor, Kaitlyn Dever, Jacob Latimore, Tyler Jesse Williams, and more. Set to be released later this year, right near the beginning of awards season, it’s shaping up to be one of this year’s most promising prestige films.
Detroit will be released in theaters on August 4.
