Nebula is set to join the Guardians in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but after that Karen Gillan is dreaming of a spinoff movie. Gillan first played the cybernetic step-sister to Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and “daughter” of Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy, but ultimately served as the lead henchwoman for Ronan. After chopping off her own arm to stay away from Gamora, Nebula is teaming up with the Guardians in the sequel and will presumably do so again in Avengers: Infinity War and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

With a number of future appearances still yet to be filmed and Marvel Studios focusing on closing out Phase 3 before looking ahead, the future of Nebula may be somewhat difficult to pinpoint. She could stick around as a hero or revert back to her villainous ways, but either way Gillan is down for a spinoff movie of her own.

HeyUGuys spoke to Gillan in the lead up to Vol. 2 and asked her about the potential for Nebula to be a leading character in her own movie. While it is something that she admits has never been officially discussed, she says it is something she would absolutely be onboard for.

Nebula has so far not had the most important role when compared to the rest of the Guardians, but with her future continuing to look bigger than before, it is something that may not entirely impossible. The MCU will apparently be drifting further into the cosmos post-Phase 3 and if they are looking for new franchises - or even smaller, simpler standalone films - to fill out the vast universe, Nebula could be a prime contender to do just that.

I mean, that would be amazing, that would be the dream. We’ve never spoken about it though – maybe I’ll casually bring it up tonight at the premiere.

If this ever does come to be, it would be a drastically different arc for Nebula than originally planned. Gillan previously revealed that her character was initially scheduled to die in the first film, so even her second appearance is a big change. While fans may be more inclined to hope for Star-Lord or Rocket and Groot to be the first spinoffs from Guardians of the Galaxy, a Nebula movie has something that others may not: backing from James Gunn. With Gunn taking on a larger role within the MCU and helping shape the future of the Marvel Cosmic Universe, if it is something he is passionate about and can find a way to make it either entirely separate from the larger story or tied in directly, maybe Nebula could lead her own film in the future.
