Karamo Brown of Dancing With the Stars ran into a little bit of controversy after showing support for former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer when he joined the current season as a dancer. The following controversy went as far as Karamo Brown and his kids receiving death threats - not only online, but in real life as well.

Fans were upset that Brown didn’t immediately and outwardly express his disapproval of Sean’s casting and seemed to openly embrace it. His initial statements only suggested he was interested in sitting down and having a “respectful conversation” with him. Brown said that his intention was to educate himself on another point of view. The ensuing drama caused Brown to deactivate his Twitter and turn off comments on his Instagram.

Unfortunately, that’s not where it ended for him. In a recent interview, Brown discussed this controversy and went further into detail about how it still affects him and his family. Both Brown and his family have received multiple death threats since the beginning of this controversy. According to People, things hit a new low when he found his son running home as fast as he could after someone chased him down with a car, shouting at both him and his dad, as well as threatening to kill him. This is even following Brown publicly distancing himself from Sean Spicer and his previous comments.

Public reactions weren’t all bad, however, as many have shown their support for Brown, expressing their gratitude for him always seeing the best in people. Others applauded him for trying to make the world a better place. It’s worth noting that Brown has previously worked with the Obama administration and fought heavily for LGBTQ+ rights. His status as a political activist wasn’t enough to drown out the flames from immense criticism.

Despite stating that the “Twitter mob mentality” had a lot to do with the toxicity of the backlash, Brown clarified his understanding of the controversy, saying he gets why people were upset with his statement. His initial comments were based on the “pleasant” conversation he had with Sean Spicer on the set of Dancing With the Stars. After the backlash had occurred and he made his political position clear to everyone, he went on to say he doesn’t regret it, nor does he wish to take back what he said.

As of right now, both Karamo Brown and Sean Spicer remain on Dancing With the Stars and, as far as anyone knows, there hasn’t been any exchanging of words between them. It isn’t clear whether Brown and his kids are still receiving death threats or not, but the controversy remains a hot topic and people continue to express either their distaste or support for Brown.

Dancing With the Stars airs Mondays at 8pm on ABC.
