Kano will return once more for the latest sequel Mortal Kombat 11. The Mortal Kombat series started with the original game in 1992 and has proved to have real legs, spanning multiple sequels, spinoffs, an animated series and two live-action movies. The games are best remembered for their brutal combat and a roster of iconic characters, like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Johnny Cage and Sonja Blade. The upcoming Mortal Kombat 11 will feature the heroes going up against Kronika, a villainess with the power to alter the flow of time.
In addition to Mortal Kombat 11, there are reports WB Animation (Batman: Gotham By Gaslight) are working on an animated movie, with Joel McHale and Jennifer Carpenter in the cast. An R-rated movie reboot of Mortal Kombat to be helmed by Simon McQuoid is also in the works, though James Wan (Aquaman) recently departed as producer. Wan wasn’t satisfied with development on the project or the story that was being worked on. Wan also confirmed he’s not involved with the movie reboot of Resident Evil, and reports linking him to the project were premature.
The complete line-up of returning characters for Mortal Kombat 11 has yet to be unveiled, though old favorites like Raiden and Sonja Blade will definitely return. Now co-creator Ed Boon has taken to Twitter to reveal Kano will be back once more too. Kano was a fighter in the original game and has appeared in some form in nearly every entry since. His distinctive look includes a metal plate covering half his face with a glowing red eye.
Mortal Kombat 11 is shaping up nicely, with gameplay footage and trailers revealing it’s lost none of its gory edge. Kano’s appearance isn’t much of a shock, but it’s definitely nice to see the return of some old favorites. The fact the franchise remains so popular after 25 years and multiple installments is a testament to Mortal Kombat’s simple but effective formula. The gameplay is bloody and intense, for sure, but it’s also got a surprisingly dense mythology too.
While Mortal Kombat 11 is sure to be another crowd-pleaser for fans of the series, it will be interesting to see what happens with the movie reboot. While the original Mortal Kombat movie from 1995 is still considered one of the better video game to movie adaptations, its sequel Annihilation is regarded as one of the worst. The follow-up essentially killed the movie series, and despite numerous attempts in the years since, a reboot has yet to come together. Wan leaving the project isn’t an encouraging sign either. Fan artist BossLogic recently released a number of images imagining stars like Terry Crews as Jax and Michael Fassbender as Raiden, which has gotten fans excited to see another live-action take on the characters.
