While fans remain sharply divided on the future of Warner Bros’ DC Extended Universe movies following the overwhelmingly negative reception that greeted Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and the critical evisceration of Suicide Squad, most are likely none the less anticipating the impending debut of the first live-action feature film incarnation of Justice League - especially since relatively little has been shown from the film thus far.
Warner Bros debuted the first trailer for Justice League at Comic-Con International in San Diego last summer - more than a year ahead of the film’s release date. Now, a new rumor suggests the second trailer could be released in spring 2017.
The new rumor arrives courtesy of the personal Twitter of entertainment reporter Umberto Gonzalez, previously best known to longtime followers of film-geek news as “El Mayimbe” of Latino Review; he’s currently employed at The Wrap. When asked by a follower on Twitter about rumors of a new Justice League trailer, Gonzalez - who rose to fame on the basis of breaking major scoops primarily about the production of superhero movies - claimed to have been told to expect it in the spring.
I was told next JUSTICE LEAGUE trailer would drop in the Spring. They still have plenty of time to promote the film including Comic Con. https://t.co/yXuKsXo6Nr— Umberto Gonzalez (@elmayimbe) January 6, 2017
If Gonzalez’ information is correct, it would make a certain degree of sense given what’s known already about the timing of the hotly anticipated superhero team-up blockbuster. Justice League will bring Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Cyborg, Aquaman and (eventually) Superman together against the alien threat of Steppenwolf. The film is set to debut in November, and dropping the first “full” trailer (a teaser made from available footage was released at SDCC) in the spring would follow a fairly conventional pattern for Hollywood marketing.
As the tweet also points out, the film is expected to have a significant presence at the San Diego Comic-Con over the summer, which would afford Warner Bros an opportunity to follow-up with yet another trailer or further news about the film - the premise of which is still largely unknown save for the main characters and broad “heroes versus invaders” setup. Among the main unanswered questions: What has actually become of Superman, who was killed by Doomsday at the conclusion of Batman V Superman?
The film, which is positioned as the fifth installment of the DCEU mega-franchise, has already scheduled a sequel - though its release date was moved in order to accommodate the subsequently greenlit solo Batman feature. It is currently set to be followed by additional solo features for The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg; along with Green Lantern Corps, Shazam, a proposed sequel to Suicide Squad and the female-centric team-up Gotham City Sirens.
