A new image from Justice League reveals Superman’s original return to Kansas following his resurrection. After kicking off Warner Bros.’ own superhero interconnected universe via 2013’s Man of Steel with director Zack Snyder, Henry Cavill reprised the iconic DC role two more times in 2016’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2017’s Justice League, the DCEU’s first and only ensemble film.

Over the course of its production, Justice League went through some very public setbacks. From rumors of numerous rewrites and the controversial director switch, even after the film’s release, it was marred by several controversies. These include Cavill’s poorly removed mustache via CGI. And now, more than two years after it hit theaters, Justice League remains at the center of fan discourse with the ongoing “Release the Snyder Cut” movement, which demands that Warner Bros. roll out the original cut of the film with Junkie XL’s initial score. There were many conversations about its state; even Cavill said he’s not sure the Snyder Cut of Justice League exists, although Snyder quickly clarified matters when he confirmed that the cut exists, and he has proof of it.

As proponents of the campaign continue to rally behind it, an influx of new details and images from the so-called Snyder Cut emerge - the latest of which is a sneak peek of what Superman’s original homecoming was before it was re-shot by interim director Joss Whedon. Set in the Kent farm, it takes place shortly after Clark’s resurrection and intense fight with the rest of the Justice League. Fan Leonardo Oliveira, who attended a Masterclass with Justice League cinematographer Fabian Wagner, shared several behind-the-scenes images from the film on Twitter, one of which shows Lois and Clark. Check out Oliveira’s photo of Superman’s original return to Kansas below:

A short segment of the aforementioned original scene was prominently used in the final trailer of Justice League where Clark asked Lois about the ring she was wearing - the one he was supposed to use to propose to her properly before his sacrificial death fighting Doomsday. However, like much of the film, it was heavily re-shot, which was quite obvious when one considers the inorganic orange filter in the sequence’s theatrical version. It was an attempt to recreate the soft glow of sunset that illuminated the initial version. As fans can see in the behind-the-scenes image, Snyder and his principal production team also had to incorporate VFX work in the bit, as it appeared to be a gloomy day when they filmed it. However, they had much better results than their contemporaries.

It’s unclear why there was a need to re-shoot the whole Kent farm scene; aside from the jarring filter, the dialogue in the theatrical version of this scene was clunky and odd. Given that the re-shoots reportedly had 80 pages of script, it makes sense that there were a lot of changes planned for Justice League when Whedon stepped in. Wagner backed up this claim recently when he said that only 10% of Snyder’s original work was retained in the theatrical cut. While all the heroes’ arcs were affected by the rushed alterations, Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and Superman’s respective bits were the most whittled down. In any case, as more information pops up about the Snyder Cut, there will come a point that Warner Bros. will have to at least acknowledge the growing conversation about it.
