The Justice League Zack Snyder cut has gained some unexpected but doubtlessly welcome support from Subway and other fast food chains. Public prominence for the Snyder Cut has skyrocketed in recent weeks, with many cast and crew members supporting its release, along with Snyder himself settling the debate about its very existence. However, it is safe to say that the very public endorsement it has just seen from Subway is a development that no one could have seen coming.
The recent chatter about the Snyder Cut began following interviews with Jesse Eisenberg, Junkie XL, and Jason Momoa, with each offering tidbits about it. Momoa has also confirmed to have seen it, while commenting, “I think the public needs to see it.” This would ultimately kick off the ongoing and seemingly accelerating Snyder Cut frenzy.
Subway’s support emerged from a Twitter post by Ben Affleck (who endorsed Snyder’s cut) regarding the charity Feeding America. In response, RTSnyderCut tweeted to Subway, asking if the fast food chain would tweet #ReleaseTheSnyderCut and make a 10,000-sandwich donation. Subway responded by setting the goal for 5,000 retweets in five hours (seemingly referencing the run time of Snyder’s assembly cut), which was met in less than two hours. Upon reaching the goal, Subway quoted Bruce Wayne’s first meeting with Barry Allen in Justice League by commenting, “So you’re fast…” Additionally, Subway increased their donation to 15,000 sandwiches, officially tweeting support for the Snyder Cut. Both Feeding America and Snyder himself expressed their own gratitude. However, this wouldn’t be the end of the fast food industry getting in on the Snyder Cut action.
In addition to Subway’s support, multiple other sandwich chains tweeted endorsements for the endeavor. So far, Schlotzsky’s, Penn Station Subs, Moe’s Southwest Grill, and McAlister’s Deli have all officially tweeted in support of the campaign. Additionally, the latter would even inject some levity to the story with the hashtag #SandwichesUnite.
Charitable causes have already been a staple of the Snyder Cut campaign, with a specific focus towards suicide prevention. Snyder’s departure from Justice League came in the aftermath of the tragic loss of his daughter, and the campaign for the Snyder Cut’s release has gained significant attention for organizing donations to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. To date, total donations to the organization have totaled $110,000.
Justice League arrived in theaters a very different movie from what Snyder had envisioned, having undergone significant reshoots following his departure. In the two years since its theatrical debut, the campaign has engaged in many grassroots initiatives aimed at convincing Warner Bros. to release Snyder’s original version of the movie. However, the past few months have seen the topic take on a massively expanded mainstream profile, with the two-year anniversary seeing an explosion of support for it on social media, including Affleck’s aforementioned tweet, along with Gal Gadot and many other high profile names advocating for it.
There’s still a lot that’s unclear about where things go from here for the Snyder Cut campaign. Although mainstream interest for it is growing by the day, Warner Bros. has yet to announce any plans to officially release it. However, even without Snyder’s version of Justice League seeing the light of day, the charitable endorsement it has now received from Subway to feed hungry families over the holidays shows that it has already done a great deal of good in the world.
