An ad asking for the release of the “Snyder Cut” of Justice League appeared during an FA Cup soccer match on January 5 thanks to a successful GoFundMe campaign. During the production of Justice League, released in 2017, director Zack Snyder left the film before it was completed due to a personal tragedy.
Following that, Joss Whedon took his place and finished the film, but as a result, the version of Justice League released in theaters was different from what Snyder originally wanted to create. And while some enjoyed Whedon’s version, it certainly didn’t satisfy many fans - especially those who wished to see how Snyder would have followed up Man of Steel and Batman vs Superman. These fans quickly created the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign on social media in order to persuade Warner Bros. to release Snyder’s unfinished version of Justice League.
On December 31, Will Rowlands created a GoFundMe campaign to advertise the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign during an FA Cup game, with an ambitious goal of £4,885 (roughly $6,390). For each £600 raised, Rowlands donated another £600 to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). It was Snyder’s daughter’s suicide that took him away from Justice League, and in light of that, #ReleaseTheSnyderCut has regularly used their fundraising efforts to help suicide prevention charities. The GoFundMe campaign got massive support from fans and it reached one-third of its initial goal in the first 30 minutes. In less than a week, Rowlands managed to raise £4,885 for the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut ads and they appeared on digital billboards during Middlesbrough v Tottenham Hotspur FA Cup match on Sunday, January 5. Snyder himself even noticed the ads and posted a photo of the billboards on his Vero account. He commented that the ads were “epic” and tagged the post with #AFSP. It’s still unclear if the Snyder Cut of Justice League will ever be released. Some fans argue that the beloved director’s version of Justice League could appear on HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming service. An anonymous insider, instead, stated that the release of the Snyder Cut is “a pipe dream”. Even cast members like Gal Gadot and Ben Affleck have shown their support for the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign.
When preparing the final cut of the movie, Whedon tried to mitigate the violence that’s typical of Snyder’s previous superhero movies. The massive reshootings, done on a tight deadline, led to inconsistencies in the movie plot. But the main thing that disappointed the fans is the lack of the intense action they were expecting. The success of the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut hashtag and this most recent GoFundMe campaign demonstrates that Snyder’s cut of Justice League has a huge potential. Hopefully, the renowned film production company will not disappoint its most loyal fans.
