After a rough previous year, Warner Bros. and DC Films are looking to 2017 to help them regain the favor of fans. Wonder Woman will be the first film out the gate in the DC Extended Universe, but there may be even more pressure for their second film of the year, Justice League. Zack Snyder is returning for his third directional outing in the universe, despite mixed reactions to both of his previous films. These responses have not stopped Justice League from earning positive press early on, which may be largely thanks to them bringing press members to the set to promote an adjusted approach.
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is technically the first time that the entire Justice League roster were featured in a movie together, but Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman were not part of the team-up to defeat Doomsday. Instead, Batman and Wonder Woman will recruit them for the team in the wake of Superman’s “death,” and a new still for Justice League has brought them together and ready for battle.
USA Today has released the latest still that shows Batman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Flash, and Aquaman stepping out of the team’s transport vehicle - the Flying Fox. Where exactly they have gone to battle is not clear based on the photo, but could very well be the underground tunnels that the parademons have constructed. Regardless of the setting, this photo is sure to generate excitement with the team forming for one of the first times. Batman-News has provided a higher-resolution version of the photo, but USA Today also had the chance to ask Snyder about his intention with the film.
Based on the photo alone, it appears that Snyder is doing all he can to make sure the film does include the biggest DC heroes. No matter how cool it is to see these five prominent Justice Leaguers together, there is one notable absence yet again - Henry Cavill’s Superman. The lack of Superman is not surprising from a marketing perspective so far, but it does also indicate that the incoming battle is earlier on in the film.
“It was all about the filling-out of this massive comic-book pantheon with the biggest and coolest heroes we could.”
At some point, Superman will be joining up with heroes both familiar and new, which will make their combined strength even greater. It would not be too surprising if Superman’s absence continues from the marketing, not only to preserve his reappearance for the film but also to give the newer heroes a chance to stand out.
