Justice League’s cinematographer Fabian Wagner reveals that only 10% of Zack Snyder’s work made it into the final version of the movie. While Snyder did get the sole credit for directing Warner Bros. and DC’s first ensemble project, it was Joss Whedon who had the last say on its theatrical cut - manning extensive reshoots which effectively whittled down Snyder’s original plan. Now, according to the film’s director of photography, not much of the original plans for the film was included in what people saw in cinemas.
Given the last minute director switch, followed by significant reshoots, Justice League’s theatrical cut ended up to be an incoherent film which didn’t go unnoticed by the public. This was reflected in critical reviews, as well as its disappointing box office performance. It also paved the way for the Release the Snyder Cut movement which demands that Warner Bros. roll out the original cut of the film with Junkie XL’s (the initial composer before Danny Elfman stepped in) score. The campaign continues to thrive more than two years after Justice League hit theaters, as fans learn more about the behind-the-scenes happenings regarding the film.
Twitter user Lee Oliveira shares a recent video of Wagner during a Q&A session where he was asked about why the VFX work in Justice League was so bad. Having worked with Snyder during the film’s principal photography, he revealed that it had something to do with the significant work done during reshoots which reportedly had 80 pages of a script. He then shared that only about 10% of Snyder’s original work actually made it into theaters. Watch his complete answer below:
Wagner is a vocal supporter of the Release the Snyder Cut petition which recently got a big surge with backing from cast members Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot, not to mention other prominent industry people rallying for the cause. After news broke out that Warner Bros. doesn’t have any plans to heed to the fans’ demand to roll the said version of the film, Snyder said not to lose hope and just continue pushing for it. At this point, it’s uncertain what the studio’s move will be considering that it doesn’t seem like the movement is slowing down anytime soon. If anything, with new details like Wagner’s revelation, supporters will be more motivated to work towards their goal.
Assuming that Wagner’s calculation is correct, it’s crazy that Snyder’s name is attached to Justice League if the film only featured 10% of his work, although the Director’s Guild basic agreement says if a director oversees at least 90% of principal photography, then a movie will maintain their name. Snyder shot all of principal photography and all of Whedon’s changes technically happened through reshoots during post-production Of course, there’s no guarantee that the public will have a better reception of his version of the movie until the material is actually out there. If the barrage of new information from the film’s production continues to come out, chances are that the Release the Snyder Cut will remain relevant until Warner Bros. doesn’t have any choice but to at least address it.
