Justice League featured a minor change to the Batcave following Joss Whedon’s reshoots. The first and only Warner Bros. ensemble superhero film for the DCEU continues to be a relevant topic even after more than two years since it rolled out in theaters. Bringing together the franchise’s biggest heroes at that point to fight Steppenwolf over the Mother Boxes, the movie was going to be the middle point of Zack Snyder’s five-movie arc for the universe.
As the public knows, however, things didn’t go according to plan. After the divisive response to Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Snyder’s creative control over his film was restrained more than ever. On top of that, he had to drop off the project due to personal tragedy, but not before completing principal photography of Justice League. Whedon was brought in to finish the movie, but instead of following the narrative that his predecessor set, the filmmaker executed extensive reshoots to fit in the studio’s requests including a mandatory 2-hour runtime. The end result was a truncated movie which used very little of Snyder’s original work despite the fact that his footage was front and center in its marketing.
Over the years, fans have dissected Justice League’s theatrical cut, discovering which parts were Snyder’s and which ones were Whedon’s. The latest from this investigative endeavor come from Instagram user with the handle thejackaldream which reveals that Whedon essentially combined the Batcave and the Wayne hangar in the film, although there’s really no need to do so. In his explanation, Alfred (Jeremy Irons) was originally working in the Batcave but had to move to the abandoned hangar where the Flying Fox was. Check out the post below:
As seen in the post, the team enters the Batcave only to shortly end up in the Wayne Hangar where the Flying Fox was being housed. These places were going to be separated in the original plan. Looking at the scenes closer, fans can also notice the change in Bruce Wayne’s clothes, meaning that time has passed in between these scenes, and they were only stitched together. As previously mentioned, it’s unclear why this was done in post-production or what was cut in between them. However, Justice League is actually chock full of cuts like this, potentially so that the movie can fit the Warner Bros.-mandated two-hour runtime.
Whether or not Justice League’s Snyder Cut - the original version of the movie with Junkie XL’s (the original composer before Danny Elfman stepped in) intended musical score remains a big mystery. Snyder, for his part, continues to release bits and pieces from his plan, giving people a better idea of what his cut of the film might have looked like. Between that and the fans relentlessly looking for details like this in the theatrical cut, it’s safe to assume that the movement won’t be dying any time soon. And it’s up to Warner Bros. whether they want to continue ignoring the campaign or come up with something that will also be beneficial for them - like potentially rolling it out on HBO Max.
