Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice gave us a sense of the dark and contentious path Warner Bros. and Zack Snyder have planned out for Batman as they continue spooling out their series of DC Extended Universe films. After the apocalyptic action of BvS, it doesn’t seem much happiness or light will be showing up in Batman’s world anytime soon.
Ben Affleck is the actor charged with the task of guiding Batman through this very heavy period in the character’s long-and-winding cinematic road. According to at least one of Affleck’s co-stars in the upcoming Justice League, Warner Bros. has picked the right man to bear the considerable burden of playing world-weary Batman.
In an interview with Sky Cinema UK and IRL, Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot explained why she believes Affleck may have nailed the role of Batman better than any actor before him. In the process, Gadot gave a little hint of the tone Zack Snyder and company hope to hit with Justice League.
“I think that Ben is such a good actor. Very, very talented. I think the interpretation that they gave Batman in this movie they wanted him to be more weary, more tired of life, more cynical, more dark. I think that Ben captured it in such a sophisticated way. He’s one of my favorite Batmans, for sure - if not the best one.”
Affleck’s Batman in BvS was certainly weary, cynical and dark, and after everything that unfolded in that film, it shouldn’t be surprising that Justice League’s version of Batman figures to be even more complex. Gadot herself will play a more “fully evolved” version of Wonder Woman in Justice League according to director Zack Snyder. Gadot will have a chance to stand alone as Wonder Woman when her movie comes out on Jun. 2, 2017.
Time will tell if Ben Affleck goes down in history as the best Batman, but he’ll certainly get a chance to make a very thorough case for himself with not only Justice League but a standalone Batman movie in the works. By the time Affleck has finished with the character, his legacy may in fact be more meaningful than the ones left by any of his predecessors.
Batman V Superman may have had its issues in some people’s eyes, but if there was one element of the movie that garnered more praise than criticism, it was Affleck’s performance as Batman. Affleck’s Batman may not have been as wired as Michael Keaton’s or as enigmatic as Christian Bale’s, but Affleck did succeed in bringing gravity and a certain genuine humanity that may have been lacking in previous incarnations of the character.
