New concept art for Justice League reveals an Apokolips pilot that was originally supposed to appear in the film. While Marvel started out their cinematic universe with solo movies leading up to the big team-up film The Avengers in 2012, DC seemed to take a different approach and released Justice League after only introducing Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman.
Besides Warner Bros. seemingly rushing into their big team-up film, the production of Justice League also had a lot of troubles. In May 2017 it was reported that Zack Snyder was leaving Justice League because of a family tragedy and that Joss Whedon would be taking over the remaining of the directorial duties. A lot of elements of Justice League were changed during reshoots, which prompted thousands of fans to petition for a Snyder cut of the film after Justice League’s release. Now, new concept art shows yet another change that was made to the film.
Posting on Instagram, concept artist Jerad S. Marantz shared images of a pilot from the planet Apokolips. Marantz shared two posts of the pilot, one of which is a masked version of the creature, while the other shows an open-helmet design. The pilot didn’t make an appearance in Justice League, but it isn’t known whether this is something that was cut before or after Snyder departed from the project. Both of Marantz’s posts can be seen below.
While this is never before seen concept art, it is hardly the first batch of concept art or storyboards that have been shared from Justice League’s production. Snyder himself has shared a lot of behind-the-scenes photos and storyboards, which have given fans an inside look at what he originally intended for Justice League. Snyder even shared a storyboard of a deleted nightmare scene, which would have finally revealed Darkseid.
Justice League received some truly brutal reviews upon its release and one of the main complaints was about the villain Steppenwolf. After the nightmare sequence in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice clearly teasing Darkseid, many people were expecting to at least see him in Justice League. This concept art of the Apokolips pilot doesn’t point to the inclusion of Darkseid in Justice League, but it does mean there was originally supposed to be more elements from his home planet Apokolips in the movie. While the odds of getting a Snyder cut at this point are slim, at least fans have concept art like this to hold them over until the next DC movie comes out.
