Jake Johnson and Omar Sy will return for Universal and Amblin Entertainment’s Jurassic World 3. Johnson and Sy first appeared as control room operator Lowery Cruthersand and velociraptor trainer Barry, respectively, in 2015’s Jurassic World. That film revived a franchise that hadn’t seen any dinosaur action since 2001’s Jurassic Park III.
The final film in the Jurassic World trilogy (sixth movie in the Jurassic franchise) is set to come out on June 21, 2021, and while not much is known about the plot, it will be bringing back a lot of familiar faces. The movie sees the return of Chris Pratt’s Owen Grady and Bryce Dallas Howard’s Claire Dearing alongside Jurassic Park vets Laura Dern, Sam Neill, and Jeff Goldblum (who made a brief appearance in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom). Also joining the cast are Mamoudou Athie and DeWanda Wise, with Justice Smith and Daniella Pineda, reprising their Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom roles. Colin Trevorrow, who helmed Jurassic World but not its successor, will be back directing the third installment.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jurassic World 3 will be bringing back Johnson and Sy’s characters to join the ensemble cast. The return of Johnson, known for his comedic talent seen in Fox’s New Girl, ABC’s Stumptown, and as the voice of a depressed Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Sy, known from the 2011 hit, The Intouchables, will no doubt excite fans. In addition to the return of three iconic Jurassic Park characters, in the form of Dern’s Ellie Sattler, Neill’s Alan Grant, and Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm, the return of memorable side characters from Jurassic World should elevate the finale’s impact.
Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World received a much warmer reception from critics than Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - considered to be one of the franchise’s worst installments. Where the former was viewed as visually impressive and entertaining, the latter appeared to exhaust the things its predecessor did well. Trevorrow has said that Jurassic World 3 won’t include hybrid dinosaurs and will take a back to basics approach to the franchise. That philosophy seems to align itself perfectly with the news of more returning characters.
Johnson and Sy’s characters were last seen fleeing the island after everything went south in Jurassic World. Sy’s familiarity with Pratt’s Owen and Johnson’s permeating wit should add to Jurassic World 3’s overall entertainment value. By stacking his cast, Trevorrow intends to go all out with his finale. This is good news for fans who found themselves underwhelmed by previous installments.
