Steven Spielberg has built a career on directing quality films, but easily one of his most beloved is 1993’s Jurassic Park, the epic tale of a prototype dinosaur theme park where things go horribly wrong in just about every possible way. Spielberg himself would return in 1997 to direct first JP sequel The Lost World, which while nowhere near as popular as the original, still has its fans. Joe Johnston took over the franchise with 2001’s Jurassic Park III, which stands out for most as the low-point of the original trilogy.

While the Jurassic Park franchise would lay dormant for over a decade after JPIII failed to earn much acclaim, it was never really a question that the brand name would eventually be resurrected. After all, Hollywood loves falling back on properties with an established fanbase. Sure enough, 2015 saw the arrival of Jurassic World, a kind of soft reboot of the franchise. While none of the leads from the original films returned, the past was acknowledged multiple times, including one particular scene likely to leave fans of the first film with a big smile on their face.

Jurassic World was a hit with critics and audiences, earning a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, and hauling in a massive $1.6 billion worldwide on a production budget of $150 million. With that kind of return on investment, a sequel was greenlit by Universal mere months later, and given a summer 2018 release date. Taking over for World director Colin Trevorrow is J.A. Bayona (A Monster Calls), with stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard both set to return. However, plot details been basically nonexistent, at least up until now. While that brief synopsis doesn’t offer too much info - and it’s in no way officially confirmed by Universal - it’s at least more than fans had to go on before, and seems like a logical extension of the themes presented in the original Jurassic World. A major plot thread in that film focused on the villainous Vic Hoskins (Vincent D’Onofrio), and his constant pushing of Pratt’s Owen Grady to train raptors that could be controlled and used as weapons in battle.

The adventures at the Jurassic World resort and theme park continue as the government has trained dinosaurs to carry weapons and use them for battle purposes.

It’s obviously a bit amusing on the surface level to imagine dinosaurs actually carrying guns, but it’s not entirely unimaginable that the events of World would lead that way. Although Hoskins didn’t make it out of Jurassic World alive, his partner in crime Dr. Henry Wu (B.D. Wong) did, who shared his goals of weaponizing dinosaurs for combat. If Wu managed to successfully create the deadly Indominus Rex, there’s no telling what else he could accomplish if given the resources, armed raptors included.
