Avengers: Endgame’s Josh Brolin, who portrays Thanos in the MCU, couldn’t avoid discussing his character’s butt and the disturbing theory involving Ant-Man at the movie’s recent premiere. After an agonizing year-long wait, Endgame’s release is now imminent, as fans eagerly await the continuation of Infinity War, in which the likes of Captain America, Thor and Captain Marvel team up for a second attempt at defeating the Infinity Gauntlet-wielding Mad Titan, Thanos. While Infinity War brought together almost every major figure in the MCU, there were a few notable omissions. Hawkeye, for instance, sat out of the initial battle but is confirmed to return in Endgame in his Ronin guise.

Another Infinity War absentee who will definitely feature in Endgame is Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man. The size-shifting superhero was somewhat preoccupied when Thanos first arrived on Earth but many fans believe that his presence could have been pivotal in preventing the villain’s infamous snap. A popular online fan theory dubbed “Thanus” speculates that Ant-Man could shrink down, enter Thanos’ body specifically via his anal passage and then expand, destroying Thanos from the inside in a hail of purple flesh, without any need to aim for the head.

The grim theory has now penetrated the mainstream and was a key topic of conversation for Josh Brolin at the L.A. premiere of Avengers: Endgame. In reference to the theory, Variety asked the Thanos actor whether his character actually possessed the anatomy required for Scott Lang to crawl into and also discussed Brolin’s wider experience in the Avengers films. The actor replied by directing the interviewer to a recent Instagram post, saying:

Many actors might shy away from a theory as grossly detailed as “Thanus” so credit must go to Brolin for taking the whole thing in his stride and responding in good humor. Fans would expect no less from the man who had Ryan Reynolds’ crotch thrust into his face in Deadpool 2. While the audience can be (more or less) certain that Endgame won’t conclude with Ant-Man bravely taking one for the team, it’ll be interesting to see if there is a small reference to the theory in Endgame’s dialogue. It’s certainly something that the MCU’s sense of humor could feasibly get away with.

““Does Thanos have a butt?” Did you see what I posted today? That’s a peach, man, that’s a peach. That’s a purple peach if I’ve ever seen one, that’s a beautiful, purple peach… It’s fun, man. The thing is, you thought, or at least I thought, it’s like a voiceover and it’s not. Everything was practical, every scene was with everybody who I had scenes with. They got the little idiosyncrasies, which were all stuff that we created. It’s a character that turned out to be sympathetic that nobody thought would be sympathetic and that was really nice. It turned into a multi-dimensional character and nobody thought it was supposed to be.”

Regarding Brolin’s more general comments about playing Thanos, it’s hard not to agree with his assessment that the character has defied expectations of how much can be achieved with motion capture performance. Arguably the biggest criticism of the MCU has been a prevalence of weak villains and it’s obvious that a huge effort went into making Thanos a fully realized, three dimensional character both in terms of appearance and personality. Expect that to continue in Avengers: Endgame.
