Josh Brolin is sharing a first look – sort of – of his character Cable for Deadpool 2. The superhero movie world was all abuzz last week when 20th Century Fox announced that Brolin was cast in the coveted role of Cable in Ryan Reynold’s hotly anticipated sequel to the 2016 blockbuster Deadpool. Several big names were considered for the role – including Brad Pitt and Michael Shannon – and the casting of Brolin caught everybody by surprise since he is already playing Thanos in Disney/Marvel Studio’s MCU and will be a pivotal character in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War.

Brolin gave a first peek at Cable – in the pre-production sense, that is – in an Instagram post from an undisclosed makeup shop Tuesday. Covered in blue plaster to get a life cast, Brolin simply wrote, “You know, just meditating,” while waiting for the material to harden. Funny enough, he had a pad and pen in hand, apparently to take notes on … something, but the pad was blank. Brolin’s hashtags on the post were pretty clear what film he was there for, which included #deadpool2 and #ryanreynoldsismybitch. The hashtags didn’t convince everybody, though. One of Brolin’s Instagram followers wrote, “Funny, you look more like Thanos.”

Brolin is bound to get a lot of questions of playing a pair of Marvel Comics favorites simultaneously, but as far as Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is concerned, the whole matter is no big deal. Feige said in an interview Tuesday that “We don’t have anything written into our contracts about other roles that people can do” and he thinks that “Thanos and Cable are two very different characters.”

While it’s going to take some time before fans get a bona fide first look at Brolin’s Cable, artists have already been at work imagining Brolin in the guise of the iconic X-Men character. Prolific graphic artist BossLogic has already offered up some stunning fan art of the character, and Monday, Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld posted on Instagram a detailed sketch of Brolin as Cable.

Perhaps the best image of Brolin associated with Cable came from Ryan Reynolds in a tweet congratulating the actor on nabbing the role, where’s actor’s mug is pictured in the froth of Deadpool’s cappuccino. Granted, it’s not a picture of Brolin as Cable, but the photo – done in a way that screams the wry sense of humor of the Merc with a Mouth – is a great example of just how much fun Reynolds and the actor are going to have making Deadpool 2.
