Jordan Peele surprises fans with a surprise new trailer for his upcoming film, Us. Scheduled to hit theaters in late March, Us is one of 2019’s most anticipated titles, as cinephiles can’t wait to see what Peele does for his second directorial effort. In 2017, he took the film industry by storm with Get Out, a terrifying and entertaining exploration of racism in America that did extremely well at the box office and earned a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars. It didn’t take long for him to line up another project, and soon viewers will get to experience Us.

While there’s still much to learn about Us (the first trailer led to several intriguing theories), it’s been confirmed that it’ll represent Peele’s continuing evolution as a helmsman. Billed as a “social thriller,” Us does not tell a story about race and is more of an all-out horror piece when compared to Get Out. Early returns of the marketing campaign have been quite promising, teasing a film that’s creepy and unpredictable. Now, those looking forward to the movie get a fresh look at Peele’s latest.

Today, Peele dropped a surprise Us trailer on the MonkeyPaw Productions (Peele’s production company) Reddit page. You can check it out for yourself in the space below, via Peele’s Twitter profile:

Though the preview only runs a minute, it does shed some new light on the story. It begins with Lupita Nyong’o’s Adelaide Wilson expressing her uneasiness regarding strange “coincidences” that have occurred since her family arrived to their beach getaway, playing up the idea that something supernatural may be afoot. The trailer’s second half is essentially recycled from earlier marketing materials, highlighting the Wilson family’s struggle against their evil doppelgangers. The origin of these nefarious visitors is currently unknown, and is almost certainly one of the mysteries Peele and company are saving for the premiere. It’ll be fascinating to see what kind of substance Us delivers, but the basic premise is effective enough to get people onboard without revealing too much more about the narrative’s intricacies. The new trailer is loaded with eerie imagery and a spine-chilling soundtrack, teasing a horrifying ride full of surprises.

Universal is certainly confident they have something special with Us, as it was announced last month the film will have its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival. Works like A Quiet Place and Ready Player One screened there last year and were able to ride waves of positive buzz to strong box office performances, so the hope is Us will be the latest in a growing line of Southwest hits. Given how amazingly Get Out turned out, it’d be understandable if some were wary of Peele hitting a sophomore slump with Us, but so far, fans have every reason to be encouraged.
