A full-length trailer for Jordan Peele’s The Twilight Zone has arrived. It’s been a life-changing two years for Peele since he went from being a fan-favorite comedic actor - known for his Key & Peele sketch comedy series with Keegan-Michael Key - to one of the pioneers in the modern horror scene, following his directorial debut on 2017’s Get Out. The latter film won Peele an Oscar for his screenwriting and was celebrated for being an incisive exploration of racism in America through the lens of a darkly satirical narrative that wouldn’t have felt out of place on Rod Serling’s original Twilight Zone TV series.
Peele is now taking things a step further by reviving Serling’s TV show for CBS All Access and serving as its host. CBS kicked off marketing for the show by releasing a Twilight Zone TV spot during Super Bowl LII at the start of month. However, the video didn’t include any actual footage from the series proper and instead served as a introduction to Peele’s narrator, who wears a black suit and tie and speaks in the same cryptic manner that Serling did, back when he hosted the series all those years ago. The teaser seemingly did its job and got the masses excited to see some clips from the show itself, ahead of its premiere in April.
With just over a month to go before the series’ arrival, CBS All Access has unveiled an official trailer for The Twilight Zone revival. The preview offers a sneak peek at the show’s general tone and style, in addition to its all-star cast of character actors. Among the people who make an appearance here are Adam Scott, Kumail Nanjiani, Sanaa Lathan, Greg Kinnear, Steven Yuen, Jacob Tremblay, Allison Tolman, and Tracy Morgan, along with (naturally) Peele himself. Take a look in the space below.
The trailer doesn’t dive all that deeply into the plots of The Twilight Zone’s individual episodes so much as it offers a primer of what to expect, as far as the series’ visual style and sense of atmosphere is concerned. That being said, we already know that Scott is starring in a remake of the classic Twilight Zone episode “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet”, where William Shatner played an anxious airplane passenger who’s the only one able to see a monster that’s tearing one of the plane’s wings apart. The trailer provides a few glimpses of the episode in question, including shots that show Scott both panicking aboard the plane and (seemingly) alive and safe on the ground below.
As for the rest of the show’s cast: it’s been reported that Kinnear and Yeun will appear in an episode titled “The Traveler”, and Lathan will show up in an installment called “Rewind”. Meanwhile, Tremblay will play the lead character in an episode titled “The Wunderkind”, with John Cho (Star Trek) playing a supporting role. So far, The Twilight Zone revival appears to be a combination of classic episodes re-imagined and brand-new stories that draw on elements of horror, satire, mystery, sci-fi, and just about everything else under the sun, much like the original series did under Serling’s watch. It’s looking pretty great too and might just be the thing that finally gets those who’ve been holding out to cave in and buy a subscription to CBS’ streaming service.
