Here’s where else you may recognize The Tudors’ star Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Jonathan Rhys Meyers has been acting for over 25 years and made his movie debut in 1994’s A Man of No Importance starring the late, great Albert Finney. He would go to play the man who assassinates Michael Collins in the 1996 biopic of the same name starring Liam Neeson and Julia Roberts, before starring in obscure horror flick Killer Tongue alongside A Nightmare On Elm Street star Robert England.
Other roles would follow, but it was Jonathan Rhys Meyers’ performance as glam rock star Brian Slade in Todd Haynes’ Velvet Goldmine that really got him noticed. He would lead the BBC’s lavish fantasy miniseries Gormenghast in 2000, followed by a TV remake of Orson Welles’ The Magnificient Ambersons and a role as Joe the coach in sleeper hit Bend It Like Beckham. He had brushes with Hollywood thanks to supporting parts in Alexander alongside Colin Farrell and IMF team member Declan in Mission: Impossible III. One of his most notable roles during this period was TV biopic Elvis, where he received good reviews for his turn as Elvis Presley.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers landed arguably his most famous role with The Tudors, which debuted in 2007. This historical series covered the life of the infamous King Henry VIII, with Meyers’ charm and intensity perfectly suited to the part. The Tudors also featured future stars such as Henry Cavill (Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice) and Natalie Dormer as Henry’s second wife Anne Boleyn. In 2010, Meyers would play the straight man to John Travolta’s wacky assassin in action film From Paris With Love.
After The Tudors came to an end in 2010, Jonathan Rhys Meyers went on to appear in movies like The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. He played the title role in NBC’s 2013 series Dracula, but despite receiving good notices for his work, the show itself received middling reviews and was cancelled after one season. Meyers’ subsequent projects include Roland Emmerich’s Stonewall and the remake of landmark TV show Roots in 2016.
Following thrillers Black Butterfly and The Shadow Effect, Jonathan Rhys Meyers would make a big impression with his role in Vikings season 5. He played warrior-priest Heahmund, who is an exceptional fighter but also battles inner demons with booze and sex. He becomes a lover to Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), which is a romance destined to end badly. Meyers would follow up the show with the critically lambasted drama The Aspern Papers, co-starring Vanessa Redgrave and Joely Richardson. The star’s upcoming projects include movie thriller Altitude and graphic novel adaptation Yakuza Princess.
