The Mandalorian executive producer Jon Favreau wants to make a new Star Wars Holiday Special on Disney+. The Star Wars franchise is about to expand into a brand new realm with its first live-action TV series. The franchise has unsurprisingly seen the majority of its content come on the big screen, with a few animated series also coming over the years. But, before any of that additional content or even a sequel was made, Star Wars grew through a made-for-TV movie.

The now infamous Star Wars Holiday Special was released in 1978 to capitalize on the success of Star Wars: A New Hope. Unfortunately for everyone involved, the results of the special were not what was imagined.  for a ridiculous plot, but is responsible for introducing Boba Fett. George Lucas has admitted that the TV movie was a mistake and Lucasfilm has refrained from reairing the special or releasing it on home video in any form. Even though many fans revere the Holiday Special and view it as a low-point for the entire franchise, Favreau wants to make another.

During a recent interview with ET Online’s Ash Crossan, Favreau revealed that he’d like to make a Holiday Special of his own. He immediately mentioned Disney+ as a potential home for his idea. Favreau’s potential Holiday Special is just an idea at the moment though, as he has not yet formally pitched it to Lucasfilm and Disney. So, he urges fans to let their voices be heard if a new Holiday Special is something they want to see.

As a big Star Wars fan, Favreau’s interest in doing another Holiday Special is understandable; he even incorporated a weapon from the special in the first season of The Mandalorian. But, Favreau’s take on the Holiday Special would also see him continue to carve out quite a claim to the brand on Disney+ early on. He’s already working on season 2 of The Mandalorian before a single episode is released. Even though the series has yet to be officially renewed for a second season, it appears that Disney and Lucasfilm are happy with what he’s done so far.

With that in mind, then it is possible the studios could grant Favreau this chance if his pitch is solid. He has a history of making fun holiday movies after directing Elf, so this could be him returning to that form. This will all depend on whether or not Lucasfilm has any interest in doing another Holiday Special though. After how bad the last one turned out, it would be understandable why they wouldn’t want to. But, Disney+ would be a perfect home for another Star Wars Holiday Special in some form, so we’ll just have to wait and see if Favreau gets an opportunity to make one.
