Jon Favreau reveals he wants to direct a season 2 episode of The Mandalorian. In just a couple of months, Star Wars makes its long-awaited debut on live-action TV via the Disney+ series (which Favreau executive produced). Set during the time between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, The Mandalorian takes viewers through the seedy galactic underworld, where mercenaries and scoundrels fend for themselves in a lawless time. The show is even going to get into the origins of the First Order, specifically how the chaotic state of the galaxy led to their rise.
Lucasfilm has a lot invested in the Disney+ platform moving forward, with other shows revolving around Cassian Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi in the works. However, The Mandalorian looks to be the studio’s crown jewel on the small screen. Over the summer, it was confirmed a second season was in the works, indicating Lucasfilm is very confident in what The Mandalorian has to offer. And as that second season comes together, Favreau is planning on remaining heavily involved.
Speaking with EW, Favreau provided a brief update on how The Mandalorian season 2 is progressing and revealed he’ll be stepping behind the camera when production commences:
Favreau’s Lion King remake was an extremely time-consuming process due to the extensive visual effects work required to complete it (the entire film is photorealistic animation). With that in mind, it makes sense Favreau wasn’t available to helm any Mandalorian episodes for the first season, but it should be fun to see him jump in for season 2. As a director, Favreau is best-known for crowd-pleasing films like Iron Man, The Jungle Book, and Elf, so his filmmaking sensibilities should prove to be a strong fit for the Star Wars universe. Favreau’s track record isn’t spotless (Cowboys & Aliens), but he has a knack for crafting quality entertainment. He’s obviously very passionate about The Mandalorian and the Star Wars franchise, and that enthusiasm should shine through in his directing.
“We’re working on season 2, writing, prepping with the directors and getting ready to direct myself, actually. I didn’t get a chance the last time around because I was doing Lion King. So I’ll step in for one of them.”
In the meantime, The Mandalorian recruited a crack team of directors for season 1, including Dave Filoni, Taika Waititi, Bryce Dallas Howard, Rick Famuyiwa, and more. Interestingly enough, each one was able to put their own stamp on their episode, suggesting The Mandalorian will remain fresh and exciting with a collection of voices lending their unique talents. It should be fascinating to see how that coalesces into a series telling a singular story, but The Mandalorian looks like it will be an exciting addition to Star Wars canon when it debuts in November.
