Joaquin Phoenix gave quite the acceptance speech last night after winning Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama at the Golden Globes for Joker. There’s been no lack of praise for Phoenix’s committed performance to the clown prince of Gotham, yet many were still skeptical that he would win out at the Golden Globes, especially given his considerable competition. Phoenix was up against big names like Adam Driver (Marriage Story), Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory), Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes), and Christian Bale (Ford v Ferrari).
The movie Joker premiered in October 2019 to mostly divided reviews. Although many critics lauded the film for its bold style and tone, others questioned if it went too far in glamorizing violent crime. Some critics even went so far as to suggest the filmmakers were irresponsible with their rendition of the famed Batman villain. But alas, controversy did little to stop Joker’s rapid ascent to the top of the box office, as the film ended up making over $1 billion worldwide by the end of its run.
Several moments of Joaquin Phoenix’s acceptance speech at the Golden Globes 2020 were censored for illicit language. But now, the full, uncensored version is available to view online, via Twitter user ThouFlowerGirl. Phoenix has spoken out in the past about his distaste for awards shows, famously calling campaigning for awards “total, utter bullsh-t.” But despite his long-held anger, Phoenix did appear genuinely grateful to win last night at the Golden Globes. In talking directly to his fellow nominees, Phoenix said in part,“We all know there’s no f-cking competition between us…I’m inspired by you, I’m your f-cking student.” Check out Phoenix’s full speech below:
The praise didn’t end there, either. Phoenix also thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for acknowledging a link between animal agriculture and climate change by foregoing a meat option at the Golden Globes. After thanking Joker director Todd Phillips for giving him the role of Arthur Fleck, Phoenix shifted his speech towards the current political climate in saying, “contrary to popular belief, I don’t want to rock the boat, but the boat is f-cking rocked.” Later on, Phoenix urged his fellow members of Hollywood to take action as opposed to just talking about the problems.
Joaquin Phoenix is an enigma of a man and an undeniably masterful actor. It’s great to see him take responsibility for himself in his speech, in addition to calling out important issues he cares about. In a night full of speeches, no one can argue that Phoenix’s wasn’t genuine. There’s no doubt that Joaquin Phoenix is at the top of his game going into 2020, proven and recognized by his excellent performance in Joker.
